Family Support Services

The Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) of British Columbia, Canada is the child protection service across the province and is provided through ministry offices and several delegated Aboriginal agencies.

Current services include:

  • Family and Individual Counseling
  • National Child Benefit Reinvestment
  • Family Violence
  • Active Measures
  • Child Welfare

BFRN Community Health Services staff and the Ministry of Child and Family Services meet regularly and quarterly at the Fort St John regional office. The purpose of these meetings is to inform BFRN families under the care of MCFD and to ensure cultural sensitivity.
There is an information sharing agreement with MCFD.

The BFRN family support worker works with families both on and off reserve to provide support and advocacy and to ensure MCFD workers are culturally sensitive in their work with BFRN families on and off reserve related to Child Welfare protection issues and concerns.

Child Welfare

We are striving to establish regular monthly meetings with the local Ministry of Children and Families (MCFD) office. The purpose of these meetings is to be informed of all families involved with this agency and to provide support as well as advocacy for our families while remaining culturally sensitive.

Further, we will be taking the steps towards the creation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MCFD ensuring our fiduciary rights are heard and recognized as it relates to the well-being of our children. The need for a child welfare committee will be established to further support this MOU and its elements.

We work in collaboration  with families both on and off reserve to provide support, advocacy and access to a Family Support worker.
